The Government shutdown, technically at midnight on January 20, 2018. As of today at 6 pm Eastern, the Government is technically shutdown. This can create high levels of anxiety if you have a Social Security claim pending with the Administration, a Federal agency. The reality is the government is not really shutdown.

Social Security offices will remain open, hearings held, even decisions made on pending claims. This information comes from an organization my office is a member of, the National Organization of Social Security Claims Representatives (NOSCCR).

If you have a hearing scheduled soon, go to your hearing, it will not be delayed. If your claim is pending at the initial or reconsideration levels, understand it will still take a long time for a decision, but nothing will be delayed.

Finally, if you are already receiving benefits, those benefits will remain and be paid out in the usual manner in which they are paid.

If you are contemplating filing a Social Security claim, you can do so at anytime as the Social Security Administration will still be taking new claims during the shutdown.
